Halloween, a day to dress up, to be someone or something we are not; to hide behind a mask and cleverly disguise our personality. Unfortunately, the wearing of such masks is no longer indicative of Halloween for we tend to hide behind such masks fearful that others will discover our true identity. Motivations have twisted from love and compassion to self fulfilling prophecies leaning toward entitlement and self satisfaction. We have forgotten how to care thus our instinct to help must be squashed so as not to become outcast with a label of goodie to shoes. Quickly we learn the art of puppetry as we pull the strings making others move as we wish. This found power excites the ego, gaining for us a found courage emancipating power while shackling humility; subjugating our necessities as novelties exposed under pride, driven by selfishness and vain glory. We hunt that we may expose the hand crafted masks of others shifting the attention from our worn masks. Mask after mask, layer after layer, we conform to the mundane of society, until we know not which is our actual profile. Worn for so long the masks have adhered together and we know not reality from disguise. Losing our grip, we decide a new mask needs to be worn; thus another one created further extending our reach, further blurring our vision of self. As we sit in the silence, it is then we realize:
That who we see, no one ever sees
That who we know, is known only by the Father
Mask by mask, we form a new person
Maintaining a new identity
An identity created in the moment
To capture the moment
Motivated by power
Instigated by pride
The ego forces control
With every mask we turn over control
We surrender self to a force which needs masqueraded
A force unsubstantiated by truth
Yet avoidable in truth
Mask by day
Another by night
Personalities change just as the weather
Unconcerned with truth
Unconcerned with self
Promotion turns to conformity
That which others do becomes today’s mask
That which others envy becomes tomorrow’s mask
Self lost among each mask
A pile of self less knowledge
Each mask more detailed than the next
Each mask takes from self a piece of truth
Wear them we shall that others may never know
Never know the truth of our soul
The truth of who we are, not who we claim to be
Claims made under the guise of a mask
Fearful of judgment, fearful of criticism
With each lash of the tongue, a scar upon the cheek
The need for a new mask
Losing sight of our soul
The heart cries out
Yet masters of puppetry we intercept the call
Cynicism the rouse
Criticism the weapon
The need for yet another mask
Piles and piles of masks
Constructed under duress
Fearful of discovery
Fearful of exposure to a world plagued by apathy
Played by irresponsibility
And yet we play to such a hand
We create masks to camouflage our appearance
Masks created in hopes of superiority
Each mask takes from us our dignity
Takes from us our person
We fear what others will say
Yet we care not what the Father will say
He already knows our heart
He knows our soul, that which we masquerade
Why do we fear others when they have no bearing on our person?
Self founded in faith, received in love
Be this self
Halloween, a day for masks or maybe a day for self?
Take off each mask
Wear the mask of self
Be who you are
Be who you remember yourself to be
The person looking back may look a stranger
But today is a day for novelty
Let self be free
Let the the heart speak
Let the soul walk about
Join the day as you
Join the day as compassion, love, and tenderness
Never again put on a mask
Self is the only masks needed
For self is equipped with God
Equipped with sincere love, mercy, compassion and hope
Look not back at the pile of masks
Rather look into a mirror and greet the stranger
Look deeply and revisit the soul
Masks are wore in fear
Love is loved in faith
Love the person looking back
Rekindle this relationship
Find the Father
Find His love
No longer will masks be needed
For self has arrived
Self is who we are
If you need a costume today, self is not yet taken.
