Connected beings, we crave knowledge of the heart, we long for understanding of the soul and so our lives set out in search for answers, in search for that which we do not comprehend with the mind, we search for our completeness, our wholeness formed only by our bond with God. That which the mind cannot comprehend the heart proclaims as truth for the heart readily speaks the word of God, the words of truth intended to allay the calamity of humanity. The Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; a mystery unto itself yet a placid solace which settles the source of our quandaries while igniting debate in the restless soul.
The existence of humanity dates back thousands of years and while the debate continues about how and why we roam the earth, it is undeniable that we do, indeed, roam the earth. Nomads traveled from land to land in search of food and shelter; they worked the lands, they dependent upon each other, this their source of survival. These people spoke of their trials, they relayed their tribulations via the spoken word which quickly became oral tradition, stories told to others as a source of inspiration, a source of motivation to carry on in a fretful world harnessed by fear. Stories of survival and protection from the dreaded enemies became the mainstays of conversation and quickly these nomads began to understand they were not alone in this world, that a source of power connected their souls and a force, greater than them, governed the universe. The world, thought only minuscule, gradually grew opening the hearts of the nomads that they may become in touch with this source of power...God. As they roamed the earth, they looked for God in their midst and find Him they did for they understood the eyes were not the source of their sight. They moved the lands with faith for they felt their connection and embraced their connection with the Father. A patriarchal world they knew hence the term Father used that they may understand the love, the protection, the guidance offered to them by God. And so the coexistence of God and people lived on. Stories of God's love for His people were passed on, opening the hearts of each listener that he or she may come to experience God in their life. Experience they did, they lived their hearts, they listened with their soul as they breathed each breath of life and expelled doubts and fears. Times fell upon these nomads when God seemed distant, almost as though God retreated from humanity, offering no protection, no love. In these times, people fell to their enemies, they were slaughtered in hatred but in these times God was not distant, God was not testing His people; rather it was the people who became distant to God, the people who forgot how to listen with their heart and experience God with their soul. The distance created doubt and erected fear, people came to believe that the loneliness they felt equated to rejection by God. Lost and forsaken, the people prayed to God and for God. Prophets were sent to help people understand that God had not abandoned them, that God resides within each person creating a personal bond between Themselves and God. Though some became enlightened to this truth, many did not understand; they believed God came in and our of their lives as readily as the winds passed through the village. Wars waged, death ensued and enslavement only mirrored the feelings of the soul, shackled by the mind. People wandered, they performed ritualistic ceremonies, they lived according to the Deuteronomic Code, they ate within the guideline of dietary laws but they forgot the most important part, they forgot to listen to the heart, to reconnect to the God dwelling within the soul. And so the cycle of disconnect continued until a woman named Mary birth a son Jesus. At this point the cycle of forgetfulness developed into a lifestyle of disregard and placated faith. God, who created the world from love, to be love knew love would not, it could not, flourish among half hearted allegiance to rituals whose intent was to center the soul and bring one back to God. These intentions were lost among a people whose spirit was squelched by the physicality of life, the obstacles preventing the passage to the heart and the roadblocks which seemed to stretch infinite miles deflating even the most well intended heart. Our flawed humanity had reached the pinnacle of understanding and so God came to earth as Christ Jesus to reckon our broken hearts. Jesus walked among us, He felt the pains of humanity, He partook in the ceremonial rituals of the day yet He always spoke from the heart, spoke with the heart. Each action was met with love for love is God and God is love. The flaws of humanity were captured in Christ Jesus as He, Himself, prayed in the Garden and asked if it be possible for the cup to pass bye Him. The recollection of this story does not show weakness within our God, on the contrary, it shows us just how difficult, how flawed humanity is for embracing the truth of our humanity, of God lived as we lived, challenges and all. Yet in our weakened state there is strength for our strength comes from God, it comes from within and is not depended upon external forces. Christ carried a cross, He died, nails through His bones, He endured excruciating pain all because of His love for us. Throughout His ministry, Christ spoke of love and He spoke of peace, both of which He fully demonstrated with His death on the cross. Christ's words and actions are our perfect model of how to handle our humanity, how to embrace and live the love of the heart. Christ walked the earth because of our doubt, because of our forgetfulness, because we simply fell into the grips of the mind, neglecting the heart. Like Saint Thomas, we doubted and God knew that the only way for us to fully comprehend His love was for us to physically experience this love in the person of Jesus. Christ our model, Christ our inspiration, Christ our teacher that we may experience God in our midst, that we may discover the love offered in our heart, offered by God dwelling in our soul. Finitely humans live thus the body of Jesus ceased to exist upon the earth; yet the soul lives infinitely, dwelling with God for all of eternity. Unfathomable to the human mind, eternity became marginalized by the mind inciting fear in the followers of Jesus. Though He spoke that death was not the end, followers feared abandonment by God and so the promise of the Spirit rested in their hearts settling the mind for it opened the door of the heart allowing the love to pour forth. The Spirit, our guide to our heart, helps us to comprehend the incomprehensible for it deciphers life via the soul not the mind. God loves us so much that we wants us to be filled with love, to live the love we fell and to become the love we know for ourselves and others but our humanity often stands in the way of this love with our innate feelings of abandonment brought forth by our humanity; hence the reassuring presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
And so the mystery of the Trinity need not be a mystery. Three persons in one God: Father, Son and Holy Sprit this the course of our development throughout history. These persons are not separate entities rather a paradoxical reality that our humanity may comprehend the truth of God and His dwelling among us. Whether we call God, Father or Mother, the image of God as parent offering unconditional love and protection settles the heart, calming the mind which seeks the ruins of the soul. An elephant graveyard we no longer inhabit for we can be found in the clutches of a warm embrace offered in love by God our Father and Mother. Because our humanity creates for us doubt, it creates for us anxiety over that which is not seen, we can turn to the image of Jesus Christ walking the earth as we walk the earth. Though from a different historical time period, and for some a different region, the parables of Jesus come to life as we imagine a man walking the earth, living, breathing, feeling as we feel. We become settled as we read these stories for we can empathize with His feelings, we can attempt to put ourselves in His shoes and wonder how we would react to any given situation for the person of Jesus was real, giving us an instant connection to Him. Isn't that what our heart longs for, a connection with that which we know but do not fully understand? The feeling of abandonment is real, we have experienced it at some point, whether it actually happened or just a figment of our imagination, we have all dealt with abandonment issues. God knows our struggles, He knows our heart for this, His dwelling. Attempting to reconnect with our soul, God sent us the Holy Spirit that we may always feel empowered to love, empowered to live, empowered to recognize our uniqueness and our incessant attachment to God. As the Spirit soars, we soar for we become alive, our breath the breath of God; our life, the life of God with our chosen path. The Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, our life cycle bringing us full circle towards our immanent connection to a Deity of love; our God of wonder, of hope, of peace. God the Father, our voice in the darkness; God the Son, our loving actions among a world of perpetual hurt; God the Holy Spirit, our trust in all that is...one God in hopes that we will come to understand our worth, our love, our call to be holiness in a unholy world desecrated by hatred. A mystery not unto itself; a mystery only to the mind, the Trinity, our promise of incomprehensible understanding when managed by the heart.
